Are We Making a Difference?

Whenever I take on a new task that will be shared publicly, I worry about the potential impact, or lack thereof, that it could have on anybody.
Such is the case as I launch Leverage 1.0: How to leverage what-you-know to become an expert, make money, and make a difference. The name of the endeavor was not chosen lightly. I firmly believe that each of us possesses some skill, some knowledge that can be of great value to other people. Simply sharing an experience can bring hope to someone who is going through something similar and on the brink of giving up because the way seems to difficult.
Two things happened in early March that suggested I am on the right track. Sort of like signs from above.
CNN’s Christine Romans interviewed cooking maven Paula Deen on American Morning. The topic was getting ahead in a rough economy. What I heard, what I needed to hear, was that Ms. Deen never gave up. She knew and appreciated her cooking skills, and did whatever it took to forge ahead.
The second incident that immediately followed happened on BET. Mo ‘nique host of the Mo ‘nique Show shared what so many of us feel every day. Basically, she talked about the cancellation of her radio show, the impact of others saying that her image was not in keeping with what television demands of its show host. And yet, here she was, Oscar winner and a TV show host.
These events reminded me of what I know intellectually, but lose touch with emotionally when times get tough. They reminded me that we all need to realize, recognize, and utilize what-we-know. It bolsters self-esteem, keeps us moving forward, and ultimately is essential to our success.
My fervent wish is that we could all put what-we-know to use in our personal and business lives. Done thoughtfully and integrated into our surroundings, what a difference it could make in the economy, our communities, and the world.
Hope springs eternal.
